Advice and Tips on Packing Before the Move
[Download These Tips]
Clothing – Hanging clothes can be packed away in wardrobe boxes, brought free of charge for your convenience. All folded clothing should be packed in to large boxes and labeled.
Curtains - Wardrobe cartons are great for moving curtains. These items can also be folded, wrapped in packing paper and packed in medium sized/linen boxes
Mirrors/Artwork- Please inform us if there is any artwork that needs special or out of the ordinary care. Find out the dimensions of your wall hangings, including mirrors and buy appropriately sized boxes. Wrap each hanging in bubble wrap or padding inserts and place into box.
Lamps-First remove all shades and bulbs from lamp stand. Then disassemble lamp stands and bases if removable. Wrap stand and base in bubble wrap and put into lamp box. Wrap lamp shade with bubble wrap and place into box. If there is extra room in the box, lamp boxes can also be used for bulky items such as linens and towels too.
Dish Pack- You will want to use a sturdy corrugated carton of double-wall construction for all breakables such as china and dishes, crystal and glassware. You may also want to use cellular dividers inside the carton as an extra measure of protection. For protection; do not put pieces inside one another. Always wrap each piece individually. After packing the fragile items, pack that box into another box for added protection. Wrap each bowl/utensil with packing paper and put into medium size boxes. Please make sure to write FRAGILE on the box for the movers, in sharpie pen.
Refrigerators/Food Items – Remove or secure shelving, unplug ice maker and let it drain a day prior to the move. All dry foods can be packed into medium-sized boxes after taping any all openings and closing all lids. Tape shut jars as well and cushion with packing paper. Pack cans and jars in smaller cartons. Do not pack perishable items or aerosol cans. Pack any perishable items in coolers with ice. If coolers are leaking we will not take them.
Stereo Equipment- Advance preparation is required for compact disc players, digital video disc players and stereo turntables. On compact and digital video disc players, secure the laser with transport screws located on the bottom or back of the unit. Most turntables have a plastic lock which should be used to hold the tone arm in place. For additional protection, you may tie a piece of string around the arm in case the lock does not hold. Also, secure the platter (where the records are placed) by tightening the appropriate screws. These are usually located on top of the turntable, but check you owner's manual if in doubt.
Speakers- Pack speakers in well cushioned dish packs. Any large or unusually heavy speakers will be padded and placed on the truck.
Televisions- Some large televisions will need to be crated prior to moving day. Let us know if you have a big screen or plasma television. Pack your remotes in the same box with their corresponding units, or in a separate clearly marked box. Call your local cable company in advance to request your service be changed. If you have a converter box, return the box and keep the receipt for future reference.
Satellite Dish and Antennas - Contact an electrician or technician from a satellite dish distributorship for the disconnection and disassembly of this sensitive equipment. Depending upon the construction and size of the unit, it may need to be crated. Have any outside antennas disconnected and taken down if they are to be included in your move.
Compact Discs, Tapes and Records - Stand compact discs and records on edge, never flat, on a layer of crushed paper. Support at both ends with large, hardcover books or several pieces of cardboard cut to fit. Top with another layer of crushed paper. Identify contents on the outside of the box and mark, "FRAGILE."
- Cassette tapes should be placed in their cases and wrapped individually in crumpled paper. Place individual tapes either vertically or horizontally on a couple of layers of crushed paper.
- If records are not in jackets, wrap individually in tissue paper or plastic wrap to protect from scratches. Records are heavy and therefore should be packed in small cartons.
Tools – Drain any power tools or lawn mowers of gasoline. We can not move any tools containing gas or oil. Long handled tools can be placed together in large lamp boxes. Wrap hand tools with large towels or old rags.
Books - Pack books into smaller boxes alternating the bindings with the open edges. All books with fragile covers should be wrapped in packing paper for added protection.
Mattress/Box Spring Mattresses - Mattresses must be covered or boxed to protect them from damage and dirt. Specially designed boxes are available from Van-Go to match the size of your beds. Mattress cartons available in king, queen, double, single (twin) and crib sizes; you'll need one for every box spring and every mattress.
Plants/Flowers- We will move live plants for short distance moves, but its best to find other arrangements prior to the move. Fake plants however will be fine and are best if packed away in wardrobe or lamp boxes.
